| De Dana Dan - De Dana Dan – Silly script flimsily made |
Priyadarshan can barely spell flicks patently based on couple of things – either a raw offbeat drama or silliest comedies. Exactly, the auteur goes shilly-shallied over ‘De Dana Dan’ and there’s nothing special you can look out for.
Indeed, it’s really appalling to witness the biggies – Akki, Sunil, Katrina, Paresh delineated with flimsy roles. Being candid to oneself is all about avoiding this film and opt for something else.
And of course, if you’re genuinely planning to kill your time by watching this flick, we’re sorry – the film doesn’t meddle around on with such aspects. How long Priyan will engage himself churning out such irksome flicks? Perhaps, you’ll walk out of theatres with such questions arisen.
Well for Akshay Kumar, the actor really has a bad year with all his film failing to be brimmed with Midas-touch. And indeed, his mantra of pair-up with Katrina Kaif doesn’t work out this time.
Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a personal butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist (Archana Puran Singh) in Singapore. Like any young man, Nitin too, dreams of a better life, but misfortune is his constant companion and his reality is his job under Archana. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali Kakkad (Katrina Kaif), who supports him financially.
Ram Mishra (Suneil Shetty), Nitin's best friend also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier delivery man. He falls for Manpreet Oberoi (Sameera Reddy), but her high society parents will never approve of marriage, not unless Ram has lots and lots of money.
In the midst of all this, is Harbans Chadda (Paresh Rawal), a shrewd businessman, is looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son off to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet's parents at a Diwali function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman, impresses them and they decide to get Manpreet and Harbans' son (Chunky Pandey) married.
What unfolds next is series of comedic bizarre regrettably spoiled with establishment of more characters.
Unfortunately, none of the actors get a proper footage and much specifically in the latter part, every actors are found disembodied to their roles. Akshay Kumar gears on with his prototyped performance much like Hera Pheri series and fails terribly to impress us. Sparring not more than 3 sequences, the actor has nothing to showcase. Ditto to Sunil Shetty: the actor stumbles down half the way in latter part with lots of actors being introduced in second half. Its over-the-top performance by Paresh Rawal and he strives to work back the magic with Akki-Sunil combo. Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy have no prominence and maybe their glam-factors engrains to certain extent.
The silly dialogues, mediocre slapstick comedy tracks and ludicrous aspects will send you annoyed. Technically, the film lacks finesses. None of the songs except Paisa are worthy heeding to… Cinematography is okay.
On the whole, ‘De Dana Dan’ isn’t actually a comedy entertainer. Rather, it can be entitled as a below average slapstick show that has nothing substantial over script, screenplay or dialogues.

Many years after Arya won our admiration for his unique definition and understanding of love, he is back as a psychologically unsound character with his own dilemmas and quirky habits in life. With highs and lows of his character, Arya-2 (though not in any way a second edition of that mature predecessor) is, nevertheless, both interesting and sympathetic. Kudos to director Sukumar for penning a totally hatke character. Though comparisons with the first part are invariable as one watches the movie, especially because of the triangular element involved, it proves totally unwise to make such juxtaposition for two reasons - one Arya has a different personality here, and two, Sukumar does not centre his film on love but on the peculiar nature of his awesome protagonist.
STORY:
Arya (Allu Arjun) is an orphan who is behaviourally sick in that he is consumed with possessiveness for his friend Ajay (Navadeep). Though the latter never accepts him, Arya still thinks Ajay is his everything in life. So, when some thugs scuffle with his beloved dost, he beats them black and blue. Arya insists that he lives with Ajay (they separated in childhood when the latter was adopted by a rich couple. Now he has grown into a software baron), and the latter reluctantly inducts him in his company. However, for Ajay, Arya is the biggest nuisance in his life; he short of consulting a psychologist to cope with or get rid of a sickly possessive friend. On his part, to score some brownie points with everyone, Arya has to pretend to be a Mr. Perfect.
The film is quite tortuous from here on. Allu Arjun has less words to speak, while Kajal tries to take the show froward on her puny shoulders all through the first half. Good amount of screen time is wasted in helping Geetha (Kajal Agarwal) prove Arya's true colours. Meanwhile, you have the soft lover boy Arya of the yore turn into 'Aparichitudu' emaciating Geetha's eve-teasers rather gorily (what is the need?). You will ask for a break from the nonsense.
ASSETS:
The film is saved by an exciting second half. Though here too, as the theatre of action shifts to Kurnool from the swanky software streets, the film threatens to border on the illogical, it takes an upturn with interesting screenplay. Arya's nature may initially confuse you a bit, but it doesn't matter. We sympathise with the character when Geetha tells Ajay that both of them are his weakness (Arya mana madhyana naligipothunnadu).
DIRECTOR'S PORTRAYAL:
Sukumar must be appreciated for bringing out as many humorous situations as possible when two male lovers and a female lover are on the trail, successfully in two films. He has a clear vision about Arya's character. The only problem is that we should not be tempted to make any correlation with the first version.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Arya-2's greatest asset is the riveting second half. It's biggest drawback is the slowness Arjun's character takes to grow on us. If it's intelligence and humour in the second half make it enjoyable, the drabness, tacky comedy (even Brahmanandam is a super-failure here) and excruciating scenes make it unwatchable in the first half.
PERFORMANCES:
Full marks go to Arjun who gets into the skin of the character in the latter half of the film; his dance moves are incredible. Navadeep looks charming and puts up a good show as a frustrated friend. Kajal doesn't make an impact. Ajay as Subbu Reddy is good. He has a domineering presence and also good comic timing. Shraddha Das has no opportunity to to display her talent.
ON THE WHOLE:
As already said, the film has too many flaws in the first half. Brahmanadam's (as Dasavatharam) comedy track is boring. In fact, at many points the film seems ridiculous. Thankfully, everything is undone by the second 80 minutes, which you will want to watch again and again.

Story :
Allu Arjun and Navadeep are thick friends and from their childhood they compete in everything they face in life together. Navadeep always wants to be a step forward than Bunny (Allu Arjun) and is always competes with him in activities like studies, games, music, dance, and so on. But as expected Allu arjun wins finally and stays always a step forward than Navadeep.
Both the childhood friends get into a corporate company and the happening life is well displayed on screen. Incidentally, Kajal Agarwal enters the life of both the friends and the two falls in love with her in the first sight. Shraddha Arya also shares the screen space along with the heroine of course. There is a surprise character in a cameo role in this film

Performances
Like always, Allu Arjun looks stylish and oozes energy. But his character lacks fizz. Sometimes, he acts as a ‘psycho’, sometimes an ‘obsessive’ lover and sometimes Mr.Perfect. His hairstyles also keeps changing in the film. His costumes are good though. Heroine Kajal looks beautiful. Navadeep’s is very passive role and has not much scope for his role. Shraddha Das is glorified extra. Brahmanandam as HR manager cum psychiatrist provides good laughs before the interval. Erina in an item song sizzles but lacks oomph factor like a Mumait or Abhinaya Sri. Mukesh Rishi does the role of a factionist with ease. Ajay as Subbireddy is good.
Visually the film is stunning with uber cool cinematography by Rajashekar. He brings richness to the movie with his great camera work. Also the artwork by Chinna and rich production values make the film eye-pleasing. But director Sukumar fails both as writer and director this time. In a desperate attempt to be as quirky as his original film, Arya, he crosses all the limits in characterization and ends up confusing the audiences. Devi Sri Prasad’s music is good to listen but on screen only two songs – I Love You, and Baby he loves you – are pretty cool. Some dialogues like Neeku Champenta Kopam unte, Naku Chachchenta Prema undi are nice.
Bottom-line!
Arya -2 is disappointment in every other way. Director Sukumar fails both as writer and director as his plotline is confusing and his hero’s characterization is negative. The film’s hero, Allu Arjun, acts like a psycho and his obsessive love and admiration towards heroine Kajal and his friend Navadeep evoke many suspicions. Although it starts off well, second half, especially towards the climax, is contrived.

| Sekhar Kammula is making the film “Leader” in Telugu in which Rana, grand son of D Rama Naidu is making his debut as hero. This film is in the making for sometime and is planned for release in the month of December. Meanwhile, Tollywood sources say that “Leader” has simultaneously made in Tamil also and that Rajinikanth played the role of Rana in it. However, there is no conformation about this either from director Sekhar Kammula or the producers AVM.
